How the scale works
The rating is the single worst hazard in play — heat, cold, wind, winter,
storms, flooding, or visibility — and we tell you which one earned it.
If the National Weather Service has a warning out, the scale defers to the
grown-ups and won't rate below it.
*Level 6 “Apocalyptic” has never
been issued. We keep it on the chart for morale.
